General information on the CfP Process:

Within the framework of a call for proposals, the Ludwig Boltzmann Society invites scientists, together with at least two partner organisations, to submit applications to set up a Ludwig Boltzmann Institute. The call for proposals is aimed at all institutions comprising scientists in the fields of humanities, cultural and social sciences and human medicine plus related fields and is in accordance with the guidelines of the call for proposals (PDF).

Each call for proposals procedure lasts around 12 months and is divided into two phases – the short application phase and the extended application phase.
The first step is the submission of a short application by the applicant. At least two institutional partner organisations must participate in the research programme submitted. The coordinator of an application (this can be an employee at one of the partner organisations or an “individual researcher”) is responsible for bringing together and informing all partner organisations during the application process. Together with the partners, he must develop a coherent research programme and a profile of the institute which they are applying to set up.

All short applications submitted are firstly checked by the head office of the LBG for compliance with form-related criteria. If they correspond to the provisions of the call for proposals, an evaluation is carried out by external, foreign experts. The experts are nominated by the jury members according to the requirements of the individual applications, whereby the applicants have the option of excluding up to three experts. In the selection of experts, both subject expertise and absence of bias or prejudice are essential factors. For this reason, the Ludwig Boltzmann Society uses exclusively experts from abroad. Attention is paid in this phase of the selection process in particular to the originality of the contents and the scientific relevance of the project submitted. On the basis of the expert opinions, the jury recommends those applications for which the Board of the LBG will request the submission of detailed applications.

In the extended application phase the applicant must set out the details of the short application already submitted by him and thereby take into consideration conditions and critical points expressed by the jury. The extended applications received are evaluated once more using international experts. In addition the applicants are invited to present the research project at a hearing. On the basis of the expert opinions and the hearing, the jury formulates a recommendation to the Board to be used in reaching its decision on the setting-up of new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes.
