Mission Statement
The Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft is an extra-university research establishment for the disciplines of medicine, humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences, which has its Head Office in Austria.
Our values and objectives
1. We deal with current issues.
We bring about benefits to society by taking up relevant questions in our research work and communicating results in generally accessible forms. Our main interest lies in topics which give fresh impetus to our research.
2. We bring different disciplines and participants together.
We consider questions from multiple perspectives and build bridges between basic and applied research. Many of our Institutes work on a transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary basis. Both inland and foreign research and user institutions participate in the set-up and work of our Institutes. This widens the circle of participants who can carry out research and profit from it.
3. We manage our Institutes professionally and from a forward-looking
perspective.
We offer freedom and security to our employees and associates. Research programmes agreed over a long term and professional staff and research management provide the framework within which this can be achieved. Our team culture is based upon a performan-ce-related approach, mutual respect and involvement in decision-making processes. We place great value on the qualification of our employees and associates within the framework of research programmes in order to promote their career development.
4. We work innovatively and achieve the highest quality.
We develop new methods and approaches for driving forward the way in which knowledge is obtained in our research. Our research processes are designed to be transparent and we seek to implement results. Our Institutes are dynamic, creative units and their existence and establishment is guaranteed on the basis of performance and international evaluation results. It is often difficult to anticipate the results of high-level research. We deal with this risk as an independent organisation with a long-term perspective.
5. We are part of the international research community.
The content and quality of our work contribute to the further development of international research. At the same time, recognition within the international research community is an incentive for us to constantly develop our work further
Objects and goals
The object of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft according to its statutes is to promote research.
Two main topics have materialised in the in the time of its existence since 1960, namely human medicine on the one hand and humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences on the other. The Institutes of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft carry out high-level international research in these areas.
Following the fundamental strategic reorganisation of 2002, it is more the working procedures than the content of the research that have been revolutionised. In order to ensure that the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft remains competitive and unique in its role as an independent Austrian research sponsor in the 21st century, new foundations have been laid down in relation to the mechanisms and structures for setting up new Institutes and managing them. As a result, Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes conduct research according to clearly defined questions, develop interdisciplinary fields of research and thus offer an attractive environment both for established scientists and for up-and-coming researchers.
The work is particularly focussed on translational research, thus the work on the interface between basic and applied research. The creation of networks also plays a central role for the LBG in that it acts as a mediator between disciplines, between different countries, between research and industry. This openness, together with modern management, transparent structures and clear objectives, allow it to fulfil its tasks optimally, namely achieving lasting benefits for people through partnership-based research.
